Super Race season champions come down to a team battle between Lee Chan-joon and Lee Chang-wook in the final round

In the end, the season champion would have to be crowned at the end. Moreover, rain is forecast for the entire day on the fifth day of the final eight rounds, which is sure to be a huge factor.

Lee Chang-wook (XStar Racing) claimed his third win of the season in the Super 6000 class final of Round 7 of the 2023 CJ Logistics Super Race Championship at Everland Speedway in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, on Thursday. After finishing second in qualifying earlier in the day, Lee took advantage of a mistake by qualifying leader Jung Chung Chul (Nexen-Volgas Motorsports) shortly after the start of the final to take the top spot and never allowed a single overtake, being the first to take the checkered flag.

This was Lee’s third win in as many rounds, following rounds 1 and 4. He also added 29 points in Round 7 alone, significantly closing the gap on the team’s driver points leader Lee Chan-jun (116 points) to 14 points. Due to his handicap weight, Lee finished 11th in qualifying and ninth in the final, earning just three points. However, he was able to reduce his burden to 50 kilograms, giving his teammate goodwill in the same conditions as Lee Chang-wook. Whoever wins will not only become the first season champion, but also the youngest, as both athletes were born in 2002. The current record is 27 years old, set by Kim Jong-gyeom in 2018.

Of course, Lee is in the most favorable situation. Regardless of Lee Chang-wook’s record, Lee only needs to finish at least third in the Round 8 final to clinch the title.

Kim Jae-hyun (Nexen-Volgas Motorsport), who was in second place after six rounds, finished seventh in today’s final, adding seven points to Lee’s total and dropping him to second place. With 92 points on the board, Kim maintains a 24-point lead over Lee and a 14-point lead over Lee, but with a maximum of 29 points theoretically available in a round and the final eight rounds expected to be underwater, he will be hoping for a dramatic last-minute upset, although it won’t be easy.

Meanwhile, in the GT class, Lee Dong-ho (ERAIN Motorsport) claimed his third win of the season. After posting the best time in qualifying, Lee started on the first row of the grid and was under pressure from second-placed Jung Kyung-hoon (BitR&D) at the start. The latter continued to threaten his lead, but Lee held steady.

With Lee’s victory, the GT class also moved to the final round to decide the season champion. The favorite to win the title is Jung Kyung-hoon. With his second-place finish, he remains the points leader with a total of 109 points. The gap between him and second-place Lee Dong-ho is 89 points. If Jung only 스포츠토토 needs 10 points in the final match, he will be crowned champion for the sixth consecutive year. It will also be the 100th race in the GT class since the inception of SuperRace.

Round 8 will be held at the same venue on Friday. The GT class will finish at 1:50pm and the Super 6000 at 3:10pm.
