Yankees have lost nine in a row, one more and they’ll lose their first 10 since 1913
They seem to have forgotten how to win. That’s the story of the New York Yankees, who have now lost nine straight games.
The Yankees lost 1-2 to the Washington Nationals in the 2023 Major League Baseball game at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, New York, on April 23. The loss snapped a nine-game losing streak and brought their season record to 60 wins and 65 losses. They are 10.5 games out of a postseason berth with the third wild card Seattle Mariners (71-55).
The loss was bitter for the Yankees. The loss was bitter for the Yankees because their opponent was Washington, who was in the bottom half of the National League (58 games, 68 wins, and a .460 winning percentage).
The teams traded runs in the third inning with a pair of solo home runs. The Yankees fell behind 1-0 in the top of the third when leadoff hitter Carter Kivum hit a solo shot. In the bottom of the inning, leadoff hitter Ben Roethlisberger hit a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1.
The 1-1 tie continued until the top of the eighth inning. Two batters later, reliever Tommy Kane got CJ Abrams to hit a solo shot over the right field fence to make it 1-2.
The Yankees battled back in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings, but were unable to capitalize on their chances. The losing streak extended to nine.
The last time the Yankees lost nine games in a row was in September 1982. The Yankees are no strangers to losing, but this season they’re more used to it. They seem to have forgotten how to win, especially lately.
One more loss, and it’s 10 in a row. It’s even more humiliating when the losing streak reaches double digits. The Yankees’ last 10-game losing streak was in May 1913, more than 110 years ago. It’s a testament to how bad the Yankees have been this year.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone told CBS Sports, “It’s really depressing, but we’ve got to get through it. I think we’re doing the right things, we’re trying to win. We’re having a 스포츠토토 tough season, but we’ve got to keep going,” hoping the team can shake off the losing streak sooner rather than later.
The Yankees play the second game of a three-game homestand against the Nats on April 24 at the same venue. Luis Severino is the starter. He was the team’s ace last year, but has struggled this year, going 2-8 with a 7.98 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) and 67⅔ innings. He hasn’t been able to break out of his slump this month, either, with a 10.00 ERA in 14 innings pitched (12 earned).
Washington, on the other hand, will be led by Mackenzie Gore. The rookie, who made his major league debut last year, has been gaining experience this year, going 6-9 with a 4.38 ERA in 24 games and 123 1/3 innings.
Can the Yankees get past Gore and end the losing streak? If they lose another game, they’ll likely fall into their worst postseason disgrace since 1913.
