‘High-quality’ comeback, KT wins like a champion

“I gave up nine runs in the first inning and was embarrassed…I have to admit.”

KT WIZ pitcher Ko Young-pyo bounced back from a rough first start of the season to earn his first win and first quality start of the season in his second start. The KT Wiz bats came alive and the offense came alive as well, snapping a three-game losing streak.

On April 2 against the Suwon Kia Tigers, Ko threw six innings, 85 pitches, seven hits, four walks, and no runs in a 10-6 victory.

It was a fierce starting battle between Ko and Yang Hyun-jong until the third inning. The ‘0’ balance was broken in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out in the bottom of the fourth, Hwang Jae-gyun led off with a single to left. With the bases loaded and one out, Choi Soo-ho led off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield.

Young-pyo Ko got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the first inning and a bases-loaded jam in the top of the third inning. After getting out of the top of the fifth inning and earning his first win of the season, Ko retired the side in order in the top of the sixth inning to earn his first quality start of the season.

KT broke through in the bottom of the sixth, capitalizing on back-to-back singles by Moon Sang-cheol and Kang Baek-ho and a sacrifice bunt by Hwang Jae-gyun to put runners on second and third with one out, thanks to a three-run home run by Jang Sung-woo. KT sealed the win with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and four runs in the top of the eighth.

Ko showed off his precise command of his pitches, recording 67 strikes out of 85 total pitches. He used a mix of his fastball, which topped out at 140 km/h (27), curveball (28), changeup (22), and slider (8) to completely dominate the KIA lineup. It was a clean sweep for Ko, who bounced back from a poor first start of the season (nine runs on 13 hits in four innings).

After the game, KT manager Lee Kang-cheol said, “Today’s starter, Ko Young-pyo, made the game with his good crisis management skills. The team’s batting lineup took the lead with a leadoff single by Choi Seong-ho, followed by a sacrifice bunt by veteran Hwang Jae-gyun and a home run by Jang Jang-woo. Thank you to the players for their hard work and to the fans for their support,” said Ko.

Ko Young-pyo also spoke to the media after the game, saying, “I’m happy to win the first game in April, and I hope it will be an opportunity to change the atmosphere of the team. I felt like I didn’t throw my best pitches in my first start of the season. I didn’t do what I’ve been doing for the last three years, so I was sluggish. Today, I prepared well to throw hard to where (Jang) Sung-woo wanted me to throw, and I was encouraged 먹튀검증 that I used my body comfortably and my velocity was consistent throughout the game. I tried to use my power well in the direction of the catcher rather than being conscious of the ABS zone. My changeup was working well and I was able to relax,” he said after his first win.

KT fell into a slump at the beginning of the season with a 2-7 record, and the team’s starting pitching staff was not able to show stable results.

“Not only Benjamin, but I was embarrassed after my first start,” said Ko Young-pyo. “I’ve gotten used to having a bad start to the season, just like last year. I tried to accept it, but how can I lose again?”I tried not to let the team get too agitated. We’re trying to recognize what we need to recognize and move on, but we’re all trying to rebound. I think we’ll be able to bounce back,” he said encouragingly.
