‘Substitute Kang Min-ho’s wedge’ Samsung defeats Doosan 9-5
The Samsung Lions swept the Doosan Bears to secure a valuable victory.
Samsung won 9-5 away from home against Doosan in the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League on Wednesday at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul, South Korea.
The win was Samsung’s third in a row and kept them in second place with 47 wins, two draws and 39 losses, while Doosan remained in third place with 47 wins, two draws and 40 losses.
Samsung starter Jung-hyun Baek earned his second win of the season, allowing four runs (two earned) on five hits (one home run) with four strikeouts and three walks in five innings. At the plate, Kang Min-ho pinch-hit and hit a two-run home run.
Meanwhile, Doosan starter Kwak Bin suffered his seventh loss of the season after giving up six runs (five earned) on five hits (one homer) and four walks with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings.
Samsung got off to a quick start. Samsung got on the board first in the top of the first inning when Kim Ji-chan drew a walk and stole second. With two outs, Ryu Ji-hyuk singled to right field, allowing Kim to tag up and steal third. With the bases loaded, Koo Jae-rook hit a grounder to the second baseman, allowing Kim Ji-chan to come home and give Samsung a 1-0 lead.
Doosan didn’t take advantage of their opponent’s mistake. In the bottom of the first inning, Henry Ramos reached on a throwing error by the third baseman and Yang Ji-ji drew a walk to put runners on first and second. With runners on first and second, Kim Jae-hwan singled to right, scoring Ramos from second. A throwing error by right fielder Lee Sung-kyu brought home Yang Ji, the pinch runner, to give Doosan a 2-1 lead.
Samsung answered right back. In the top of the second, Park Byung-ho led off with a walk, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by Ahn Joo-hyung to tie the game again.
Doosan answered back. In the bottom of the second inning, Kang Seung-ho drew a walk and came around to score on a triple by Park Joon-young to make it 3-2.
Samsung responded with cannon fire. In the top of the third inning, Kim Young-woong drew a walk and Lee Sung-gyu hit a two-run homer over the left-field fence to make it 4-3.
Doosan didn’t go away. Doosan regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Ramos hit a solo home run over the left field wall.
Samsung’s momentum continued. In the top of the fourth, Yoon Jung-bin walked and Lee Byung-heon singled to left to put runners on first and second with no outs, and Ahn Joo-hyung laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. With runners on second and third, pinch-hitter Lee Jae-hyun stepped to the plate. A wild pitch allowed Yoon Jeong-bin to score from third base, and pinch runner Lee 안전놀이터 Byung-heon came home from second base. Lee scored another run on a sacrifice fly to center field, giving Samsung a 6-4 lead.
After Samsung’s run, both teams’ bats went cold until the seventh inning.
Once again, it was Samsung that broke the silence. In the top of the eighth, Park Byung-ho drew a walk and pinch-hitter Kang Min-ho hit a two-run homer to left-center field to make it 8-4.
Doosan immediately responded. Yang Seok-hwan led off the inning with a triple and scored on Kim Ki-yeon’s sacrifice fly to center field with one out.
With a three-run lead at 8-5, Samsung drove in a run in the top of the ninth. In the top of the ninth, Ryu Ji-hyuk singled up the middle, stole second base, and scored on a single by Jeon Byung-woo to make it 9-5.
Doosan was unable to score in the ninth inning, and the game ended with a 9-5 victory for Samsung.
